The state’s border to the west is made up of a rugged coastline along the Pacific Ocean. California also boasts a number of rivers with Class I to Class V Rapids.

South Fork American River
The South Fork American River has approachable Rapids and provides easy accessibility to rafters. They have Rapids like “Troublemaker”, “Satan’s Cesspool”, “Racehorse Bend”, “Triple Treat”, “Hospital Bar” and so on. The river consists of large waves and swift bends followed by calm pools. Because of upstream dam releases, the South Fork can be rafted all summer. There are two distinct runs on the South Fork of the American: Chili Bar and the Gorge. Make sure you get to experience these runs. This is also the popular river for Rafting in the west. Likewise, the South Fork American River is Class III, providing an exciting river experience.

North Fork American River
If you are looking for more thrills, go Rafting in the North Fork American River. This carves a deep, sheer gorge which plunges in a deep crevasse down the western slope of the Sierra. There are three distinct sections and the Chamberlain Falls is by far the most popular. Be prepared to run into Class III-IV gorges with a series of boulder slalom Rapids. Moreover, the river is best known for its crystal clear water, challenging Rapids, and spring wildflowers. A good outfitter is important if you are taking this run because the Rapids are very difficult and the water flow can be unpredictable.

Tuolumne River
The Tuolumne River is one of the major rivers draining the western slope of Sierra Nevada. It is a Class IV-V slalom course of Rapids of escalating intensity. Expect staircase Rapids, chutes, pools, steep drops, holes and reversals. It is also best known for its numerous and exciting Class IV Rapids in an amazing "Wild and Scenic" river canyon. There are the Rock Garden, Sunderland’s Chute and Ram’s Head which then leads to Class V Clavey Falls. Camping, Hiking, and swimming can also be enjoyed in this site. This river is definitely an adrenaline-pumping adventure.

California Salmon

This river is far more difficult than the South and North Fork American River. The water is clear and the beauty of the bedrock canyon is stunning. This river is recommended for experienced rafters. Expect a lot of runs and difficult rapids ahead of you.

Kern River
Kern River is approximately 249 km long. The deep canyon of the river is popular for Fly Fishing and water sports such as Rafting, Kayaking, and river boarding. It is also sometimes called as the “Killer Kern”. River sections range from mild wave trains to wild roller coasters. Rafting in this river is open to everyone.
