History

The earliest inhabitants of Maine were Algonquian-speaking peoples that include the Wabanaki, Passamaquody, and the Penobscots. The French first colonized this area in 1604. Over the years, Maine has been fought over by the French and British, as well as Americans themselves later in its history.

Maine became the 23rd state of the United States on March 15, 1820.
