Preparing a Rafting Trip
As with all other outdoor activities, sufficient planning is a crucial phase in Rafting. There are several things to take into account to ensure that you will have a safe and enjoyable Rafting Trip. Aside from preparing your Rafting Gear and equipment, you need to consider the type of trip, number of persons included, mental and physical readiness of the rafters, insurance matters, and other concerns. This section covers several things to think about when preparing for a Rafting Trip:
- Single day or Multi-day trip
The provisions and pieces of Rafting Clothing to bring depend on how long the trip will be. For multi-day trips, you may want to go camping, which means carrying additional gear, equipment, and other essentials.
- Weight of load
If you have more pieces of Rafting Gear or load to carry, the performance of the Raft will be greatly affected. In general, minimize the weight of the load. If this is not applicable especially in multi-day trips, just make sure to load everything properly so the Raft will stay maneuverable despite the heavy weight.
- Number of persons included
Rafting is best shared with family, friends, and colleagues. The agency will need to know how many persons are included in the trip. This can also be one of the factors to consider in choosing the type and/or size of Raft to be used.
- Booking essentials
Book the Rafting Trip as early as possible. Go for a reputable Rafting agency and know the planned itinerary, accommodations (if any), equipment rental, credentials of the guides, claims for accidents, and other booking details.
If you are going to a foreign country, make sure to get the necessary information about the area before traveling. Know its Rafting policies (river access, etc.).
- Insurance matters
Since Rafting is inherently a risky water activity, make sure to determine what your insurance covers. You will be required to sign a waiver which indicates that the agency will not be held liable for any untoward incident, unless it is undoubtedly due to negligence.
- Physical and mental readiness
Make sure that your body and mind can meet the demands of the activity. No matter how prepared you think you are, always be ready for any untoward incident. There are risks involved and having a clear mindset is necessary in making sound decisions.
Preparation is the first step in ensuring the safety and enjoyment of the group. You may change your plan when necessary. Be fully-equipped and prepared to face the whitewater action.
