Animal & Insect Hazards & Attacks

Animal & Insect Hazards & Attacks One of the hazards associated with Whitewater Rafting is getting bitten or attacked by insects and/or reptiles and other animals. Do not be surprised. Take note that you are in their natural habitat. Getting bitten or attacked by mosquitoes, alligators, snakes, and other members of the animal and insect life can spoil the whitewater fun. Some cases can also be fatal. But do not let this stop you from running the rapids. Know how to avoid having close encounters with these insects and animals and learn what you can do in case of an attack.
  1. Insect bites and Bee stings
Mosquitoes, bees, and other insects can annoy you in your Rafting Trips, and some species can transmit certain diseases. Take the necessary measure to avoid insect bites. Use insect repellent sprays or lotion. Do not wear any sweet smelling fragrances often found in after shaves and perfume. These often attract flies, bees, and other insects.

  2. Bear attacks
Check with local authorities if the area you are entering even has a bear population. They will know and can give you further details on the kinds of bears that live in the area and how to avoid contact with them.

  3. Bear attacks are very rare and avoidable. Just keep these guidelines in mind:

    • Bears and other mammals are attracted to the smell of food. If you or your camp site smells like food, it could attract bears that might consider you as an obstacle to their food and attack. Try to keep yourself, your Rafting Clothing, and your tent from smelling like food. If necessary, change clothes after cooking.

    • If you encounter a bear, stay calm and never run from it. Running will trigger the bear's predatory instincts.

    • If a bear attacks you, play dead. Roll face down and clasp the back of your neck. Stay put and do not move until the bear moves away.

  4. Encounters with Alligators, Snakes, and other Reptiles
Alligators, crocodiles, and snakes are some of the animals that you are likely encounter in a riparian environment. Check with local officials if these are present in the area to avoid close encounter.

Preventing insect bites and animal attacks should be your first step of defense. However, if and when you or someone else in your group gets bitten or attacked, make the necessary procedures to keep the victim away from further danger.
