Capsizing
There can be various causes why a Raft capsizes. It can turtle (completely turn over) due to a big wave or a strong, turbulent current. It can also be that it collided with a rock or the weight of the rafters is not evenly distributed on the Raft.
Raft stability relies on several factors so whatever the reason is for getting the Raft turned over, it is important to know how to re-right it. It is fairly easy, provided you know beforehand the techniques in re-righting a Raft. In this section, learn some helpful guidelines in re-righting a Raft:
- The use of a flipline will make the recovery of the Raft easier. The flipline is a thick nylon rope which is thrown across the floor of the Raft when re-righting. Swim on the other side of the Raft. Hold onto the flipline and stand on the edge of the Raft. While holding the flipline, lean backward to pull the Raft over. Of course, make sure that there are no rocks behind you when you are trying to turn the Raft over. A heavy Raft may need more than one rafter in re-righting.
- When rafting in a group and the vessel capsizes, the first thing to do is to make sure that all rafters are safe.
- If the Raft capsizes in turbulent waters, it is wiser to leave it like that. Climb onto the floor of the overturned Raft and then steer it through the rapid.
Capsizing can occur anytime. In fact, it is almost to be expected in a River Rafting Trip. When it happens, the only thing you need to do is to re-right the Raft. Whatever technique you employ in flipping it, just make sure to keep your safety in check at all times. Drills prior to conquering the rapids are therefore imperative so you will know what to do when the Raft turtles. Keep these guidelines in mind and be a great help in re-righting a capsized Raft.
