Rafting for the Physically-challenged

Rafting for the physically-challenged Exciting, exhilarating, and even relaxing, Rafting can run the full range of emotions. Ranging from a peaceful float trip to a challenging rapid adventure, you will surely enjoy a Whitewater Rafting trip even if you are physically challenged.

You can do it

Nearly everyone can raft, even those who are out of shape, overweight, elderly, physically challenged or have a combination of these conditions. Some outfitters arrange trips for those with specific physical challenges. Just ask about your special concerns when you arrange your Rafting Trips.

People who have diabetes, cancer or other medical conditions have successfully gone down the river. Not surprisingly, many people who are physically challenged such as amputees and persons with paraplegia have not only gone down the river but have done it with confidence and style.

Before a Rafting Trip, it is imperative to know what your level of physical capacity is. It is recommended that if you are concerned about pre-existing medical conditions, consult your physician before participating in a rafting trip.

Also, swimming ability is one of the considerations in rafting. You don’t have to know how to swim but for safety purposes, you must be able to maneuver yourself in the water with a life-jacket holding you up.

The Risk Factor

Like any adventure sport, there is an element of risk in rafting. However, it is actually surprisingly safe with more than 200,000 people rafting safely each year.

Serious incidents are extremely rare. Professional river guides go through rigorous training in water safety, Rafting Techniques and first aid before they take a commercial trip down the river. Also, modern pieces of Rafting Gear & Equipment used by outfitters already have installed safety features.

The biggest danger on the river is failing to follow the instructions of your guide. Your guide knows the obstacles to avoid and the safest way to negotiate every rapid. Simply follow instructions and you'll surely have a safe and enjoyable trip.

Novice, No Problem

Experience is not necessary to get started. Although some rivers are suitable only for experienced rafters, many rivers are perfect for first-time rafters, including children.

Experienced guides will teach you important paddling techniques and maneuvers before you hit the big water. Just be sure to discuss your needs with the person that takes your reservation, who will be well trained to guide you to the right option for you.
