River Signals

In a Rafting location where distance and the noise of the rapids overcome the sound of words, Hand Signals are a necessity for better understanding and safety purposes. They are useful in seeking help and communicating with people in other Rafts. They are also used in River Rescue operations. Visual signals can be done with the use of an oar, or with hands. One important thing to remember is that prior to riding the rapids, rafters should discuss the different signals that they will use. Learn some of the basic Hand Signals used in Rafting:

Are you OK?
(tap your head; the one being asked taps his or her head to indicate that he or she is okay)

River Signals - Stop Stop!
(hold your oar or paddle horizontally above your head)

Help!
(hold your oar or paddle vertically overhead and move it from left to right)

River Signals - Stop this side Stop this side.
(hold your oar or paddle horizontally to the left / right)

Watch / Look
(point at your eyes and then at the direction where you want others to look at)

River Signals - Go Go!
(hold your oar or paddle vertically above your head)

Effective communication greatly helps in making certain that you will have a safe and enjoyable River Rafting Trip. Make sure to talk about the Rescue Hand Signals and signs that you and the rest of the group will use so you can communicate properly.
