Rafts - Care & Maintenance

Rafts - Care & Maintenance The Raft is one of the most essential pieces of Rafting Gear. It is designed to withstand bumping into rocks, too much exposure to ultraviolet rays, and other abuses that come with the activity. But aside from these, there are other things that can greatly affect the performance of your Raft. You will realize sooner than expected that it is no longer up for the job. To ensure the optimum performance of your Raft every time you use it, make sure to maintain its good working condition. Let this section guide you on how to take good care of your equipment:

Transportation
When transporting a Raft, make sure that it is free of mud and sand. It should be placed on top of the gear load in such a way that other heavy objects cannot rub holes in them. If necessary, pad potential wear spots with soft objects. Also, make certain that the Raft does not rub against the sides of the trailer. If you need to move the Raft from one place to another, carry (do not drag) it.

Storage
When storing a boat, wash it off with soap and water to remove any trace of food particles that may be left from the summer's use. If rodents are a problem, use Dcon or other rodent deterrent in the storage area. Store the Raft in a cool, dry place.

River Use
  • Avoid parking in places where wave action causes wear on rocks.
  • Check the area before pushing off to avoid damage from sharp rocks. It is advisable to pull the Raft on shore to minimize the wear on the bottom due to the rocking action on the sand and rocks.
  • Like bicycle tires, small tubes need more pressure than large tubes. Stiff tubes perform better.
  • Do not over inflate your Raft. Inflatable floors and tubes can take more abuse if they are not inflated rock hard. Discuss this issue with others to determine how much pressure you should use in a given situation.

Do not expect too much on a poorly-maintained Raft. If you want your Raft to be able to withstand collisions on rocks, chafing, and to give you a great time on the water, make sure to take good care of it.
