Schwarzenegger Dries American River
SATURDAY, 30 JUNE 2007
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has recently signed an urgency legislation that will effectively turn the lower American river into “Dry Creek” this July 4, as people are now banned from drinking any alcoholic beverages while rafting between the Hazel and Watt avenues.
Local efforts to end the “spring break” style of partying that has attracted thousands of young people to the area during Memorial Day, Labor Day and Independence Day have been going on for years, with things getting out of control in the recent years as seen by the growing number of cases of fights, excessive profanity and public nudity.
"Our goal has been to make the parkway and the river family-friendly during the summer holidays," said Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan. "I'm glad to see the governor agrees."
The bill, having been passed as an urgency matter, takes effect immediately.
