The proposal to turn the Saskatoon weir area into a whitewater park is stirring controversy.
The Saskatoon Whitewater Park Committee is recommending a $14 million plan to build a whitewater park that would cater to whitewater activities such as rafting, tubing, canoeing, kayaking as well as swimming.
According to whitewater park advocate Kent Gray, at present swimming is prohibited in the river and they aim to change the whole mindset and encourage people to visit the river.
But the Whitewater Park is faced with opposition. Among the issue for opposition is possible increase traffic along the riverfront homes as well as the disturbance the development project might cause to the wildlife.
At present the city is sponsoring meetings to discuss the public's opinion until the end of the week.
