State Whitewater Commission blasted by Auditor
SATURDAY, 29 SEPTEMBER 2007
West Virginia's State Whitewater Commission was grilled by the legislative auditor for allegedly allocating the bulk of its budget on its whitewater enforcement officer’s salary instead of on efforts to improve rafter's safety.
According to result of an audit conducted during the 2002 to 2006 period, West Virginia ranked fifth with their number of rafting fatalities.
The audit also reveals that the commission failed to document any discussion related to injury and fatalities during the said period. The legislative auditor added that by not including injuries and fatalities in the commission's quarterly meetings resulted in their failure to determine the underlying causes to such issues.
