New Rafting Standards Implemented in Canada
THURSDAY, 1 MAY 2008
Submitted By: ana de guia
The government of Canada now implements Special-purpose Vessels Regulations and the Vessel Operation
Restriction Regulations that would protect both the rafters and the environment. These regulations are made under the Canada Shipping Act, 2001 (CSA 2001). Local authorities can post restrictions on the access of a vessel or class of vessels to specified waters, the mode of propulsion used, maximum engine power or speed, and recreational towing activities (e.g. water skiing).
All river rafting companies should have safety equipment standards. These include wearing helmets, life jackets, and other pieces of safety gear. Companies should also have operational standards such as first aid training and familiarization trips. Moreover, detailed records of the trips will be maintained.
